Ask Aimee
Folate vs. folic acid.
Most prenatals use folic acid, the synthetic form. Mothersense uses folate as 5-MTHF, the active form, and B12 as methylcobalamin.
Aimee explains the difference between folate and folic acid, and what it means when you read a prenatal label.
Aimee answers: folate vs. folic acid
Read the label
The forms, exactly as printed.
- Folate as 5-methyltetrahydrofolic acid (5-MTHF), 400 mcg. The active form the body can use directly.* No folic acid.
- Vitamin B12 as methylcobalamin, 1,000 mcg. The methylated form of B12.
- B2 as riboflavin 5′-phosphate, 20 mg. B6 as pyridoxal, 20 mg. B1 as thiamine hydrochloride and benfotiamine, 75 mg.
- Magnesium as dimagnesium malate and calcium as dicalcium malate, 200 mg each. Zinc as bisglycinate chelate, 20 mg. Selenium as selenium glycinate, 150 mcg.
- Choline, 950 mg. DHA + EPA, 390 mg. CoQ10, 100 mg. Vitamin D3, 800 IU. Built into the same sachet, so there are no add-on bottles.
- Iron-free. Left out on purpose. Ask your provider what is right for you.
- Third-party tested for heavy metals, microbial contamination and label accuracy. Made in the USA in an FDA-registered, cGMP-certified facility.
Two of these are methylated forms: folate as 5-MTHF and B12 as methylcobalamin. Every other nutrient is listed in the form printed on the Supplement Facts panel.
Why the form matters
Folate, already in its active form.
Folic acid is the synthetic form of folate. The body converts it in several steps into 5-MTHF, the form it uses.
Mothersense supplies folate as 5-MTHF directly, and B12 as methylcobalamin.* No folic acid anywhere in the formula.

How it’s built
Split-form delivery.
Three bioavailable formats, one sachet. Nothing is compressed into a form it doesn’t belong in.
01Oil-based nutrients go in softgels.
DHA and EPA, the choline compounds and CoQ10 are fat-soluble. They are carried in an oil base rather than pressed dry into a tablet.*
02Minerals go in tablets, many as chelates.
Zinc, copper and manganese come as bisglycinate chelates, selenium as glycinate, and magnesium and calcium as malates, alongside methylfolate and the active B vitamins.*
03Iron is left out on purpose.
Mothersense leaves iron out, so it can be added only if your provider and your bloodwork call for it.
That is why one day of Mothersense is seven pieces, three tablets and four softgels, sealed in a single sachet, instead of one tablet that had to leave things out to fit.
Why it exists
“The prenatal I wish existed when I needed it most.”
Aimee, Founder of Mothersense™
“When I started researching prenatal supplements, I was surprised by what I found. Many formulas didn’t include the nutrients that current research highlights as essential. Others used forms that aren’t well-absorbed. And very few were built with input from clinicians who work directly with women during pregnancy.”

What actually shows up.
Questions
The ones that actually come up.
Does it contain folic acid?
No. Folate comes as 5-MTHF (methylfolate), 400 mcg.
Is every B vitamin methylated?
No. Folate (5-MTHF) and B12 (methylcobalamin) are the methylated forms. B2 comes as riboflavin 5′-phosphate, B6 as pyridoxal and B1 as thiamine hydrochloride and benfotiamine, exactly as the label prints them.
How much folate do I need?
Folate needs rise in pregnancy. Ask your provider how much is right for you, counting food and any other supplements you take.
Does it contain iron?
No. Mothersense is iron-free by design. Iron needs vary, so ask your provider whether to take it separately.
Seven pieces is a lot. Isn’t that the opposite of easy?
Seven pieces, one sachet, once a day, with a meal. The count is what it takes to carry this much nutrition in forms the body can actually use. What changes is the number of decisions: one sachet instead of a prenatal, a choline bottle, an omega-3 bottle and a pill organiser.
What if I miss a day?
Take the next sachet at your next meal. Every sachet is identical, so there is nothing to re-sequence and nothing to count.
What allergens does it contain?
It contains soy. The softgels contain gelatin, so Mothersense is not vegetarian.
